The frantic motion is a human interpretation of the cricket’s life. But from the cricket’s perspective, life is brief and filled with danger and tragedy.
The frantic duet gives way to a ballade like (pseudo) berceuse (owing a little bit to M. Dupre for inspiration) but the ballade too is human interpretation. The voice of the cricket is heard at the conclusion once again – out of time and key (mostly) with the ballade, as if to pose the question: was my interference really a good thing at all?
